That's how I felt when I started interviewing for roles in data. I'd heard about some different stages I might encounter, like technical interviews. But I still had no idea what to expect. It was all this mysterious process that somehow can take months.

This chapter is dedicated to “everything data interviews” so that you know what to expect and can prepare yourself for success.

Why Do Interviews Take So Long?

Around the same time I seriously considered searching for my first job in data, I heard the advice, “Tech interviews can take months.” I had no idea what that meant. You couldn't be interviewing every day during that period of time, right? Would they just take a long time to get back to you? Are we talking about multiple companies or a single company taking that long?

That was a year ago, and I get it now. They do take a long time. Here are some of the reasons:

  • Interviews are multistep processes. They will often go three or more rounds!
  • Companies can take a week or more to decide if they want to move you to the next step.
