A couple of busts of Mozart, sitting on a shelf waiting to be sold (above). But who’s going to go for plain plaster when they could have the same thing in gleaming chrome, or tactile marble? Changing the surface properties of even the most basic materials is a task that every Photoshop artist should be familiar with.

HARD SURFACES are generally easier to simulate in Photoshop than those with transparency. Often, it’s just a case of grouping a surface texture with the object you want to apply it to, and then adjusting the layer blending method so that the contours of the underlying object show through.
