CREATING THE COACHING RELATIONSHIP

I’ve already said that the quality of the relationship between client and coach is probably the most important single factor in the effectiveness of coaching. It is a very special type of relationship, agenda-free (on behalf of the coach) and respectful. It creates a safe and creative space for the client, where they can look honestly at themselves, experiment with versions of themselves, and, above all (if they want to), change themselves.
Creating and maintaining (or ‘holding’) this space is the great coaching art – and NLP is full of techniques for achieving this, which I shall present in this chapter.
