Rescripting is a process I created myself. It is based on the work of Gregory Bateson, one of the founding fathers of NLP, who invented the concept of the double bind (later written about by RD Laing). A double bind is a pair of commands or injunctions or beliefs that pull someone in two opposing directions, so they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. They usually take the form of ‘if x, then y; if not x, then z’, where y and z are both undesirable outcomes. Examples are:
Work hard and be alone, or don’t work hard and be unworthy.
