Coaching and managing your team
Managing your team is a core task for any manager, yet many managers are given little or no training on how to do this well. Business schools avoid the topic. If you are lucky, you may have half a day’s training on styles of management or on motivation. The theory sounds great, until you get back to the office. You are meant to either know it intuitively or pick it up as you go along. Then we all wonder why bosses seem to be so weak at managing teams.
The challenge is not just for new managers: it exists at all levels. At every level the most basic question is: ‘How do I take control in my new role?’ Just because you have a big title, it does not mean you are in control.
