The art of management is making things happen through people we do not control. This is not easy. We are meant to collaborate with our fiercest rivals. Your real competition is not a rival firm: it is sitting at a desk near you. Your colleagues are competing with you for the same pot of promotions, budget, bonuses, and management time and attention. They have different priorities and needs, which they will push at your expense. Then we wonder why there is tension in the office.
