Chapter 17

Virtual and cross-cultural teams

Managing any team can be challenging, but managing a virtual team is on a different and sometimes more difficult dimension. A virtual team is one where team members are spread geographically and this may be across time, space and organisational boundaries. There are different degrees of virtual teaming, from the global team that never meets, to teams who are located on different floors in an office building. Even small amounts of dispersed working can affect team work and collaboration1.

Virtual working is very much a part of our lives with 87% of respondents to a recent virtual team survey2 indicating that 25% of their productivity depended on virtual working.
