It was a momentous day for me when I signed off invalidity benefit and became self-employed. Three years of illness had taken its toll not only on my finances but also my self-esteem. It felt good to no longer feel awkward when I met people and they asked, ‘So what do you do?’ Having an illness with no visible outward symptoms and being only in my early twenties had often been met with a surprised response when I replied ‘Actually I don't work. I'm ill and on invalidity benefit.’

But that was about to change. It felt good to say I was self-employed, and it felt even better when I bigged myself up and said, ‘I run my own business.’
