Winning the Race

The man who starts out simply with the idea of getting rich won't succeed; you must have a larger ambition.

John D. Rockefeller

What would you say were the rules of career success, the rules that allowed certain people to win the career race?

Work hard, you might say. Do your tasks and duties to the best of your ability. Take the initiative and contribute to the team.

Yes, all of those matter. But only to a degree. And mostly when people are in the very earliest years of their careers.

The main problem is that a lot of people don't know the real rules of the game. Or, to be more precise, the rules change midway on the journey – but no one bothers to tell you when or how they changed. Doesn't seem terribly fair, does it?
