Chapter 8. Data Collection and Event Configuration

The purpose of collecting data is to provide an alarm on custom thresholds and to perform trend analysis. For example, interface traffic can be monitored for critical devices and configured to send a message to a paging system when a threshold value is exceeded. MIB variable data can be collected to determine a reasonable threshold value. Because NNM has no means of determining the critical devices, MIB variables, or threshold values within a given enterprise, NNM does not perform data collection until it has been configured.
