5.10. Resource Management Tools

Resource management tools use performance measurement dynamically in the process of reallocating resources on a system. The tools in this category are Process Resource Manager (PRM) and Workload Manager (WLM).

Resource management tools implement Service Level Objectives (SLOs) that are defined by the organization. These SLOs are usually part of an agreement called the Service Level Agreement (SLA) that is negotiated between the user department (or Line of Business) and the IT organization.

SLOs may include various measures such as:

  • Application criticality

  • Acceptable planned and unplanned downtime

  • Acceptable duration of outages

  • Average monthly or annual availability

  • Expected hours of availability
