Diagnostic tools provide a snapshot of system or subsystem behavior at particular moments. Although data from diagnostic tools can also be used to compare system activity over longer periods, the tools are designed primarily to provide current data.
Diagnostic tools are of many different types, some offering a general, multipurpose set of metrics covering many subsystems, others with more specialized uses.
