Chapter 5

Scheduling, link adaptation, and hybrid-ARQ

Abstract

A key characteristic of mobile radio communication is the typically rapid and significant variations in the instantaneous channel conditions. Rapid, and to some extent random, variations in the experienced quality of each radio link in a cell must be taken into account and preferably exploited. In this chapter, some of the techniques for handling variations in the instantaneous radio-link quality are discussed. Channel-dependent scheduling deals with sharing, between different users, the radio resource(s) available in the system while achieving efficient resource utilization. Link adaptation deals with how to set the transmission parameters of a radio link to handle variations ...
