In mid-2006, the Bush administration was determined to make substantial and visible progress in protecting U.S. borders and reducing illegal immigration. A key part of the strategy was to dramatically increase the size of the U.S. Border Patrol, a component of the Customs and Border Protection Bureau (CBP).
