Chapter 6: Hypothesis testing
Abstract
The statistical procedures used to answer research questions are examined. The approach is practical, rather than theoretical. The procedures studied include the analysis of variance (ANOVA), post hoc pairwise comparisons, the chi-square test, a test for normality, and four common non-parametric tests for ordinal data. Distinctions between parametric and non-parametric tests and data are elaborated. The procedures are demonstrated for the most common experiment designs in HCI. The examples use commercial statistics applications and GoStats, a downloadable Java application available on the book's web site.
