Sleep disorders

Abstract

Inadequate sleep can be the result of sleep deprivation by choice but it can also be the result of biological dysfunction that can lead to a sleep disorder. Sleep disorders can take many forms, but they all disrupt sleep and can lead to a decreased cognitive function, decreased health metrics, and decreased quality of life. This chapter will describe several of the most common and relevant sleep disorders in a general manner to introduce the reader to what a sleep disorder is and the consequences of those disorders. There are many conditions that disrupt sleep and are classified as sleep disorders. There are commonly identified sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and insomnia.
