In the early twentieth century, the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco was famous not only for its luxurious gambling halls but also for a peculiar and somewhat grim pastime for the wealthy elite: pigeon shooting. The casino raised pigeons on a nearby rooftop and would hold the birds in a tunnel beneath the casino to be released at regular intervals. The birds, unaware of their fate, would fly out of the tunnel where the casino patrons waited, armed with shotguns.
