chapter 8Training and Development
This section covers the all too often confused topics of training and development. Although training is typically used in conjunction with development, the terms are not synonymous. Training typically focuses on providing employees with specific skills or helping them correct deficiencies in their performance. In contrast, development is an effort to provide employees with abilities that the organization will need if it is to grow, compete, and prosper in the future.
After completing this chapter, the reader should be able to
1. Understand the difference between training and development.
2. Determine the type, amount, and nature of training and/or development needed in your organization.
