Chapter 2 Humor and identity
The study in this volume is situated in a field of inquiry referred to as “humor and identity” (Sierra 2019, Sinkeviciute 2019b) which brings together two concepts of longstanding individual interest in the social and language sciences. Humor as a social phenomenon has been studied for decades, with research aimed at documenting the many genres and styles of humor, its linguistic mechanisms and interactional structure, and assessing the social consequences of its use. Likewise, identity has received attention both for how it contributes to social organizations and interpersonal relationships, and for how it is deployed in conversation and interaction.
