Declaration&Tests
Most of us live one of two lives.
There’s the life we’re currently living—the roads we pave daily that are safe, predictable, and “realistic.” We are finance majors, accountants, or engineers, or if we find ourselves in the field we dream of—we do so in what writer Steven Pressfield calls a “shadow” career.1
It’s the key grip on the movie set who dreams of being director, the MFA faculty member who desires to write novels, the manager at Patagonia who salivates at snowcapped mountains.
Close, but oh so far.
This all starts innocently; we tell ourselves we’ll engage in these faux careers for a while as we figure out next steps. We’ll work on our real dream on the side, at the margins of early mornings and late nights. ...
