17Leading the Team

Throughout the project, one of our primary roles is to support the team in getting work done. This means making sure they have a healthy environment to work in and that they have a healthy mindset to accomplish the work. We also support the team by providing a structure to make decisions effectively and by making decisions fairly and in an unbiased way.

In this chapter we will discuss how to establish and maintain a psychologically safe environment where people feel comfortable expressing themselves. We will discuss how to foster qualities of adaptability and resilience in your team members. Because being a leader requires fair and unbiased thinking, we will discuss critical thinking and three of the main types of bias.

A lot of our day‐to‐day job entails solving problems and making decisions. Occasionally we are called on to resolve conflicts. We will describe techniques for each of these and provide some options you can use. With a shift toward remote work, it is likely you will have one or more remote team members. Therefore, we will discuss ways you can effectively work with team members in different locations.

ESTABLISHING A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

Throughout the project you will need to pay attention to the working environment, not just the physical environment, but also the team's well‐being. This includes making sure that the environment is psychologically safe, that there is culture of adaptability, and that the team demonstrates resilience.
