Postcolonial State

From the time of Lord Hailey’s report in 1950, on the political and governance front, things moved swiftly in Nyasaland. It was federated with Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) intensifying drive the nationalism and prompting active resistance to colonialism. Leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress who were fighting for the independence of Nyasaland were jailed in 1959. One of them was Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda. In 1963, Nyasaland was self-governing under the Prime Minister Kamuzu Banda who became the president when Nyasaland became the independent state of Malawi in 1964 and a Republic on July 6, 1966.
