But I have a hard time with this idea. It’s not that I have a hard time accepting that I use prosthetics, or that some of my life has been spent in non-physical worlds, or even that these little cartoon characters of ourselves might be the harbingers of a new kind of evolution. What keeps me awake at night is the question of who “I” am when I drive an avatar. The core problem an avatar presents is, what is self? Books such as Sherry Turkle’s Life on the Screen and Donna Haraway’s Simians, Cyborgs, and Women explore online identity.
