When I went on the O’Reilly platform, I was astonished to find all the books there, plus live events and sandboxes so you could play around with the technology.I’ve been on the O’Reilly platform for more than eight years. I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

But I have a hard time with this idea. It’s not that I have a hard time accepting that I use prosthetics, or that some of my life has been spent in non-physical worlds, or even that these little cartoon characters of ourselves might be the harbingers of a new kind of evolution. What keeps me awake at night is the question of who “I” am when I drive an avatar. The core problem an avatar presents is, what is self? Books such as Sherry Turkle’s Life on the Screen and Donna Haraway’s Simians, Cyborgs, and Women explore online identity. But I haven’t seen many books that address the question of a person who runs his own club of alts, or one who builds two avatars, one the master and one the slave. How ...
