GETTING TO CARNEGIE HALL

“I need help in being more assertive,” said Liz, a new coaching client. “I try to be firm, but somehow I always find myself giving in when colleagues ask me to work on their projects.” I asked Liz to try practicing saying no by role-playing with me. I would play her colleague asking for help, while Liz would simply be herself and try to say no.

Me (as colleague): Liz, can you help me on the XYZ project?

Liz: I'm really busy.

Me (as colleague): But I know you can do a great job. Without your help, I'll never get this done.

Liz: I don't know…

Me (as colleague): Please say yes. I'm counting on you.

Liz: Well, I'll see if I can free up some time.
