Space-efficient volumes in the IBM DS8880
This chapter describes the design and implementation of Extent Space Efficient (ESE) volumes in the DS8880. As described in Chapter 1, “Thin provisioning” on page 1, ESE volumes can be created with small or large extent sizes.

Support note: Track Space Efficient (TSE) volumes are not supported on the DS8880 storage systems.

With the new licensing model that was introduced with the DS8880 family, thin provisioning with ESE volumes is available with the basic license for FB and CKD volumes.
