3.4. Performance management

A Performance Management tool is an application that collects and manages performance data from e-business hardware components such as servers and network devices, and software components such as applications and databases, over a period of time. Following are basic questions that have to be answered when establishing a performance management solution:

  1. What are the performance characteristics of the component? (For example, a high end server has characteristics such as memory, processor utilization, disk space, paging, and so on.)

  2. What are the performance characteristics that can be monitored (and collected)?

  3. What is the frequency of collecting performance characteristics of the component?

  4. What time in the recent past ...
