206 IBM Session Manager Implementation
8.1 Maintenance overview
This chapter provides maintenance guidelines for Session Manager for z/OS
product. Session Manager PTFs allow you to apply changes without shutting
down the Session Manager address space. This allows Session Manager to
remain active if critical maintenance must be applied without disrupting users.
New function can also be delivered in a PTF, although the maintenance can be
installed in the running Session Manager instance. If the new function provided in
the maintenance is something that is loaded at start up of the Session Manager,
then a restart is neceassary.
8.1.1 Determining your maintenance level
You can determine the maintenance level of your Session Manager by locating
the following message in the Session Manager auditlog:
ISZ0001I Session Manager version (c) Copyright Macro 4 plc yyyy-yyyy. All
Rights Reserved.
Our system has PTF UQ92882 applied and the message indicates the level of
our Session Manager system is 1.205A.
ISZ0001I 5655-K01 IBM Session Manager for z/OS 1.205A (c) Copyright Macro 4 plc
1982-2004
8.1.2 Installing and removing maintenance
Maintenance can be installed and removed using the PATCH, PATCHSU,
APPLYSU, and REMOVESU statements. These are all special configuration
control statements. These should only be used at the request of your local
support representative.
The PATCH statement causes the loaded Session Manager code to be altered.
No change is made to library members. This means that each change must be
reapplied each time Session Manager is initiated, but when all the changes are
contained in one source member, it becomes easy to maintain the changes and
to see at a glance which changes are currently in effect. It also means that PTFs
can be applied while Session Manager is active.
Each Selectable Unit (SU) contains either a programming enhancement or
Session Manager maintenance code. Issuing the QUERY ISZSMGR command
displays a description of each SU that has been installed, as in the following
example. Our Session Manager system has installed SU30 for Online and Batch
Administration Support as well as SU40, which includes several new functions,
bringing our Session Manager up to the 1.205A maintenance level.
