Chapter 4. Tape building blocks 87
The installed drives may be any mixture of LVD or HVD attached, up to a total of six. The
drives are ordered for plant or field installation using chargeable feature codes:
Feature #8003 provides one IBM Ultrium tape drive with an LVD Ultra2/Wide SCSI
adapter.
Feature #8004 provides one IBM Ultrium tape drive with an HVD Ultra/Wide SCSI
adapter.
Each IBM Ultrium tape drive contains the electronics and logic for reading and writing data,
control of the tape drive, management of the data buffer, and error recovery procedures. All
tape drives are packaged as a common assembly that is a field replaceable unit (FRU),
designed for quick removal and replacement. The cartridge capacities are unaffected by the
number of drives installed.
The 3583
Ultrium Scalable tape library is also available in an OEM version as the 3586-SL72
(see Table 4-3 on page 90).
4.2.7 IBM 3584 UltraScalable tape library
The IBM 3584 is a larger modular library with the potential to house a maximum of 72 tape
drives in the maximum six frames. Designed for automated tape handling, the IBM 3584
UltraScalable tape library, shown in Figure 4-4, is the largest member of the IBM Ultrium
family of tape library storage solutions.
The different LTO drive interfaces give you a wide range of attachment capability. The IBM
3584 is supported in these environments:
AS/400 and iSeries with OS/400 V4R4 or later
RS/6000, RS/6000 SP, and pSeries with AIX 4.3.2
Sun servers with Solaris 2.6, Solaris 7 or 8
Hewlett-Packard A, L, N, and V-class servers with HP-UX 11.0
Netfinity, xSeries, and other PC servers supporting Microsoft Windows NT 4 or Windows
2000
The IBM 3584 UltraScalable tape library provides tape storage solutions for the large,
unattended storage requirements from today's mid-range, open systems up to high-end
network servers. Combining reliable, automated tape handling and storage with reliable,
high-performance IBM LTO Ultrium tape drives, the IBM 3584 offers outstanding retrieval
performance with typical cartridge move times of less than three seconds. For convenience in
migrating from DLT, the 3584 can support a mixture of LTO and DLT drives and media.
The IBM 3584 can be partitioned into multiple logical libraries up to a maximum of 72. This
makes it an excellent choice for consolidating tape workloads from multiple heterogeneous
open systems servers. The partitioning can be done because of the 3584’s multipath
architecture. This allows the control elements of the library to be addressed from every SCSI
ID.
When a 3584 is partitioned, each logical library consists of a distinct set of drives and storage
slots. Cartridges are not shared between logical libraries to assure protection of the data.
The IBM 3584 library can, as an option, be attached to a 10/100 MB/sec Ethernet. When this
is done, the library offers both a Web interface, StorWatch 3584 Specialist, and a remote
support facility for Call Home, when the library can use an optional modem to dial out and
report problems automatically. The StorWatch Specialist allows you to monitor and control the
3584 remotely from a suitable Web browser using these functions:

The IBM 3584 is a modular tape library that consists of frames which house tape drives and
cartridge storage slots. You can install a single-frame base library and add up to five
additional frames. You can tailor the library to match your system capacity and performance
needs from 14 TB to 248 TB (28 TB to 496 TB with 2:1 compression) and use up to 72 IBM
LTO Ultrium tape drives.

You can install the three IBM 3584 models together to make up the IBM 3584 UltraScalable
tape library:
IBM 3584 Model L32: The base frame for the IBM 3584 library which can be installed on
its own or in combination with the Model D32. It can contain up to 12 LTO drives.
IBM 3584 Model D32: An expansion frame containing up to 12 LTO drives, up to five of
which (either D32, D42 or a combination) can be installed with the Model L32 base frame.
