Chapter 5. Tape solutions 113
5.1.2 Backup for departments
This solution provides dynamic tape sharing for up to 14 heterogeneous servers for fast,
reliable, cost-effective backup, archive, and restore, and up to 7.2 TB capacity.
Description
Apart from using a different model of the IBM 3583, this solution differs from the workgroup
solution by using the IBM 2108-G07 SAN Data Gateway for additional SCSI connectivity. The
IBM 3583-L72 Scalable tape library provides low-cost, industry standard and certified LTO
storage for backup, restore, and archival. LTO is a significant breakthrough in open tape
storage by providing enterprise-level reliability, performance, and capacity with up to six tape
drives and up to 7.2 TB uncompressed capacity.
The IBM 3583, with six HVD tape drives, is connected to the servers through an IBM
2108-G07 SAN Data Gateway and an IBM 2109-S16 16-port Fibre Channel switch, as shown
in Figure 5-2.

In addition to the hardware configuration, Tivoli Storage Manager or other
industry-recognized storage software provides highly-automated, centrally scheduled,
policy-managed backup and archive facilities to protect data in distributed environments.
The SAN fabric is managed by the StorWatch SAN Fibre Channel switch specialist and the
StorWatch SAN Data Gateway specialist.

Implementation notes
For disk systems that support FlashCopy or Instant copy, it is possible to eliminate the
back-up window by creating a
time zero copy and backing up from the copy.
If backup or extensive tape usage is likely to occur during peak productive time, then, for
performance reasons, we strongly recommend that you have a separate Fibre Channel host
bus adapter and connection for tape.
Tivoli Storage Manager Tape Library Sharing or other equivalent software product is required.
For library sharing, all the servers must share the same LAN and protocol so that backup
clients can communicate with the backup server for tape library services.
The IBM 2108-G07 SAN Data Gateway has four SCSI buses. To ensure adequate bandwidth
to each drive, configure no more than three drives HVD tape drives per SCSI bus. Note that
LVD drives are not supported on the IBM 2108-G07.
Sample configuration
Table 5-2 shows a sample configuration, provided for guidance only, which excludes rack,
cables, connectors, media, and country or region-specific information. Twelve servers (eight
Intel servers running Windows NT or Windows 2000, two IBM RS/6000 running AIX, and two
Sun servers running Solaris) share an IBM 3583 Scalable tape library with six drives and
uncompressed capacity of 7.2 TB. The servers are connected to the library through an IBM
2109 Fibre Channel Switch and IBM 2108 SAN Data Gateway.
