5.2.2 Large department and enterprise solution

This solution provides dynamic tape sharing and remote tape vaulting for up to 28

heterogeneous servers for fast, reliable, cost-effective backup, archive, and restore with up to

248 TB capacity. It provides both library sharing and tape pooling.

Description

The IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library provides low-cost, industry standard and certified

LTO storage for backup, restore, and archive. The IBM 3584 library is a significant

breakthrough in open tape storage by providing enterprise-level reliability, performance, and

capacity with up to 12 tape drives per frame, up to six frames, and up to a total uncompressed

capacity of 248 TB. Figure 5-6 shows the configuration with HVD SCSI drives connected

through the IBM 2108-G07 SAN Data Gateway.

Figure 5-7 shows the same configuration with direct Fibre Channel attached tape drives.

Notice that the two gateways are replaced by a switch. Figure 5-7 also shows the option to

replace two of the inter-site links with a short link between the two switches for locations

where long distance fibre connections (dark fibre) are expensive. This does not affect

availability, but can impact performance, so it is a trade-off between performance and cost.

In addition to the hardware configuration, Tivoli Storage Manager or other industry recognized

storage software provides highly automated, centrally scheduled, policy-managed backup

and archive facilities to protect data in distributed environments.

The SAN fabric is managed by the StorWatch SAN Fibre Channel switch specialist and the

StorWatch SAN Data Gateway Specialist.
