Installation in a 3494 library
The 3590-J70 may be installed in a 3494-D24 frame. The D24 frame can also contain up to
eight 3592 drives. See Figure 6-17.
Adjacent frame support allows the attachment of up to 10 3590-B1A, 3590-E1A, or 3590-H1A
drives to a 3592-J70, with four in the D24 frame with the J70 and either six in an adjacent
3494-D22 frame, or two in an adjacent 3494-L22 or L24 frame. The 3592-J70 supports a 12
3592-J1A drive spread between the D24 and the D24 with adjacent drive support.
The maximum number of drives with adjacent frame support using 3590-x1A drives is 10 and
12 with 3592-J1A drives, whether SCSI or Fibre Channel drives. There is only one adjacent
frame.
Figure 6-17 3494 adjacent frame support
When installed inside the IBM 3494 Tape Library, the J70 controller offers a choice of
attachment to the Library Manager. Either the RS-422 attachment or the Attachment
Concentrator Feature can be configured.
The 3592-J70 is not supported in a 3495 library.
Installation in a STK silo-compatible frame
One or two 3592-J70s may be installed in a 3592-C20 frame.
Up to 20 3592-J1A drives can exist within a single C20 frame, with up to 80 in a single Library
Storage Module (LSM). Also cradle features are required for the 3592-J1A drive support. The
3592-J1A cannot be installed into a C12 or C14 frame.
6.4.2 Features
Table 6-6 shows the feature codes for the features applicable to the 3592-J70 control unit.
The FICON-related feature codes are shaded in gray.

Chapter 6. FICON attachment of IBM tapes 165
Table 6-6 3592-J70 features
The new features for FICON attachment are:
Feature 0103: This provides one conditioner patch cable that allows ESCON 50 micron
trunk fiber to be reused for FICON. This 2m (6.5 feet) cable has an SC duplex connector
on one end and an ESCON connector on the other as shown in Figure 6-10. A patch cable
is needed at each end of the ESCON fiber that is being reused (the control unit end and
the channel end). Two sets are needed for a Fibre Channel switch.
