Chapter 5. Using TotalStorage Productivity Center for Replication on Windows 2003 137
5.3.10 Managing a FlashCopy session through the GUI
In this section we will complete a number of actions against a FlashCopy section. It is
important to remember that the process for FlashCopy is slightly different for an ESS / DS
storage subsystem as opposed to the SAN Volume Controller (SVC). With the SVC you will
issue the Start command prior to the Flash command to tell the SVC to perform the Prepare
function. With the ESS and DS subsystems only the Flash command is needed to start the
copy process.
Figure 5-88 FlashCopy
In this exercise we will use the session itsoess_fc as Figure 5-89 displays. To open the
session details window click the session name which functions as a hyper link to the session
itself.

Next from the drop-down menu select Flash as indicated in Figure 5-90 on page 138 and
then click the Go button.

Chapter 5. Using TotalStorage Productivity Center for Replication on Windows 2003 139
As we can see in Figure 5-92 the columns Recoverable and Copying in the center of the
window now show a count of 2. This represents the target volumes which are about to be
available.
Figure 5-92 Flash invocation
To check on the progress of the copy select the View Progress option from the drop-down
menu as shown in Figure 5-93 on page 140. Click the Go button to continue.

Figure 5-93 View Progress status
Figure 5-94 on page 141 shows the status as still being 0%. This does not represent the
progress about how many tracks are already copied, but rather on the number of FlashCopy
volume pairs which are completely copied and in sync. Zero indicates that no FlashCopy
volume pair finished background copy yet.

You may modify the FlashCopy relationship and issue another action against the FlashCopy
session which applies to all FlashCopy pairs in the concerned session.
We select
Initiate Background Copy from the drop-down menu as shown in Figure 5-95 on
page 142. Click the Ok button to continue.
