Topologies
When deciding what high-availability topology is appropriate for an enterprise, there are a number of factors to consider. The cost of a system outage needs to be weighted against the cost of implementing a highly available infrastructure. The length of time for which an outage can be tolerated also needs to be considered. The following definitions are used by the authors when discussing HA and are the basis for the remainder of this discussion:
Low availability— Anything less than high availability (HA).
High availability— Application cannot undergo an unplanned outage for more than a few minutes/seconds at a time, but may do so as often as necessary or may be down for a few hours for scheduled maintenance. This is likely achievable ...
