CHAPTER 9The Leadership Process Overview … and Cold Exposure
LEADERSHIP IS NOT EASILY DEFINED. ASK TEN PEOPLE FOR the definition of leadership, and you will likely get ten different answers. Likewise, ask ten people what leaders do, and you are likely to get ten different answers. And all of these answers, by the way, may be accurate to one degree or another.
Similarly, the language and concepts we use in leadership present the same ambiguity. But they shouldn't. The concepts of leadership are simple. A leader must have full situational awareness and understanding, which gives them the ability to make good decisions regarding that situation. Additionally, a leader must make it clear what they will hold their people accountable for. While these concepts may be simple, the fact is that good, effective leadership takes a little more work than this.
Great leaders don't ignore their emotions and experiences or those of their teams. Great leaders don't assume their people will know what they are being held accountable for. Great leaders don't hope their people will know what they are supposed to do. Great leaders don't rely on assumption and hope.
Great leadership and continuity among teams require something that is rarely found: a common leadership language based in process.
