CHAPTER 21SMACCC! Your Brain Is Paying Attention; Rewiring and Prioritizing
YOU'RE SITTING ON THE COUCH WATCHING AMERICAN GANGSTER for the umpteenth time, eating chicken wings and chips and salsa. The last time you watched it, you drank a few too many Budweisers, so today you are going to go with Bud Light or Coke. As you are enjoying the movie (again), you realize it's been a while since you did any exercise. Actually, you realize it's been a while since you read a book, went to a museum, or did anything in your free time other than watch American Gangster and eat crappy food.
This makes you feel a little bad. You are not proud of yourself. So, you boldly proclaim (to yourself) that you are going to change … tomorrow! Then you throw another chicken wing to the back of your throat as you contemplate how great tomorrow will look. But you don't want to contemplate it too much because the good part of the movie is coming up.
Do you know what your brain is doing at that moment? Laughing at you. That's not the scientific term, but it might as well be. Your brain knows you are not serious because your Actions did not even come close to your “conviction.” You said something and just sat there doing the same old thing. Your brain did not create any new chemicals because no new emotion was created. No new chemicals were sent to the body from the brain because no new Action was taken to create a new experience which creates new emotions. Tomorrow will look just like today, count on it. ...
