Hot debate over energy

BP’s chief executive, Bob Dudley, warned of “big uncertainties” facing the energy sector if Scotland votes for independence, as he became the highest profile business leader to speak out for the union.

Mr Dudley’s insistence that “Great Britain is great and it ought to stay together” was leapt on by campaigners against independence, who have been frustrated by the reluctance of high profile executives to back their cause in public.

Asked what a break-up of the UK would mean for BP, Mr Dudley said the “uncertainty around currency” would cause “practical” issues, and that overheads would rise.
