At this stage in our collective tech dependence, it’s hard to believe that when I was growing up my only connection to the world at large consisted of a corded telephone on the wall, a transistor radio, and a television with five channels (three broadcast networks, a public broadcasting station, and a Christian channel). I didn’t use a computer until after college. When I did research for speech and debate competitions, I had to search for printed publications on microfiche at the library. When I worked at Commander’s Palace, I took all the reservations over the phone and jotted them down in a big book with a ballpoint pen. We didn’t have cell phones. When the internet emerged, it seemed like a novelty.
