Chapter 10. Lab II-3 Make Scale Casts of Hair Specimens

Equipment and Materials

You’ll need the following items to complete this lab session. (The standard kit for this book, available from http://www.thehomescientist.com, includes the items listed in the first group.)

Materials from Kit

  • Goggles

  • Forceps

  • Slides, flat

Materials you Provide

  • Gloves

  • Microscope (40X, 100X, and 400X)

  • Nail polish (colorless)

  • Nail polish remover (or acetone)

  • Specimen(s): human hair

Warning

Although none of the activities in this lab session present any significant risks, as a matter of good practice, you should always wear splash goggles, gloves, and protective clothing when working in the lab, if only to avoid contaminating specimens.
