SAWS AND WOODWORKING

Constructing scenery requires excellent woodworking skills. Carpentry in the theatre has more in common with cabinet work than it does with most home construction. Cabinet work is very exacting, and it results in freestanding units that are transported to the work site for installation. Houses are stationary, and for the most part it really doesn't matter how heavy they are, or if they can be moved. The framing for a house is extremely heavy, and those methods are really not workable in a theatre. Scenery must be lightweight enough to at least move from the shop to the theatre and quite often, from one theatre to another.
