Chapter 7

Image Interpolation as Inverse Problem

7.1 Introduction

In Chapters 2 and 3, we introduced a study of polynomial image interpolation. We have dealt with both space-invariant and space-varying (adaptive) interpolation. The previously mentioned techniques of image interpolation are signal synthesis techniques. They are based on synthesizing unkown pixel values using their known neighborhoods. In most of the work in the field of interpolation, ideal sampling of the source low resolution (LR) images is assumed. The LR image degradation model is not considered. We have considered this degradation model in deriving the iterative interpolation algorithm in Chapter 3, but there are many more requirements to consider.
