Why do you make pictures?
I make photographs to define the person that is referred to as Roger Ballen. It’s my hope that my photographs will allow viewers to expand their knowledge of their core psyches.
What are some of the important themes in your work? Are there concepts that you consistently revisit?
I have been taking photographs for nearly 50 years, and my work has continually transformed itself. My work is fundamentally psychological and focuses on key aspects of the human condition, namely our inability to control chaos or the future and to resolve our own identity.
