When a router is performing autosummarization and it needs to send an update about a subnet of a network across an interface belonging to a different network, the router does not include the subnet, but rather sends the major (classful) network address instead. If the routing protocol is a classful routing protocol the (classful) subnet mask is not included and is assumed by the receiving router. If the routing protocol is a classless routing protocol, then the (classful) subnet mask is included with the update.
