3Introduction

This chapter outlines the activities and steps necessary to kick off the TPM process. The twelve-step process described here is consistent with the process originally outlined by Seiichi Nakajima in his book Introduction to TPM (see Table 2), although the order of the steps is changed slightly to fit western-style organizations. Whereas Nakajima separates the twelve steps into four stages of implementation, we have consolidated them into two: preparation and implementation. In the preparatory stage, major planning activities for TPM’s introduction take place, but on-the-floor changes take place during the implementation phase.
