A promised land?

America, because of its geographical size and distance from other continents, has never been a great tourist destination. Even U.S. citizens find it difficult to squeeze in Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon on the same itinerary. Overseas visitors have additional problems. The aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, with its sense of insecurity at home and heightened readiness at the borders, has not made for a very reassuring or welcoming image for foreign tourists. Air travel is more cumbersome than ever: As for prospective immigrants, the war in Iraq and the ensuing loss of goodwill overseas have undoubtedly made some people hesitate.
