Are there preferable alternatives to the commercialized American society? It depends of course on what you want. But sometimes, the news makes you think. For example, the other day I read in the paper about an immigrant family from Ghana who sent two teenage daughters back to Ghana for high school. The idea was for the daughters to get back to their roots, and also to protect them from the lack of discipline and high levels of independence and materialism found in American high schools.
