Introduction

India had a flourishing foreign trade since time immemorial, both from the northern and southern part of the country. India had always been known as a trading nation. The country had established trade links with China, Roman Empire and other European countries. Pliny talks of the enterprising Indian traders taking away the wealth of his country. The country exported pepper and other spices, apart from pearls and precious stones. The South had trade links with South East Asian countries as the sea-faring merchants had established commercial contacts with many countries in Asia and as far as South Africa.
