India’s innovation journey started on a strong foundation but its pace was stifled by an inward-looking and disjointed agenda. Much of it in the earlier years was fuelled by protectionism to drive self-reliance that coerced Indian industry, military and the public sector to innovate within its means for subsistence that often resulted in substandard and low- quality outcomes.
