Real-izing the "Big Other"
Not long ago, during the course of a graduate seminar in media theory I was teaching, a student asked if I had seen the movie Zeitgeist. When the class learned I had not even heard of the movie, they offered to lend me a copy. I was much surprised, upon skimming through the movie, to discover that it was a classic conspiracy-theory pseudo-documentary that assembled a highlight reel of hackneyed conspiracies ranging from the manipulation of religion by secret cabals to the claim that the World Trade Center was brought down not by terrorist planes but by controlled detonation.
