4.1  INTRODUCTION

Demand for efficient and reliable data transmission and storage systems is gaining more and more importance in recent years. With the emergence of new and sophisticated electronic gadgets as well as that of large scale, high-speed data networks demand is accelerated. In this sphere, a major concern of the designer is the control of errors so that reliable reproduction of data is obtained. The emergence of coding theory dates back to 1948, when Shannon in his landmark paper ‘A mathematical theory of communication’ demonstrated that, by proper encoding of the information, errors induced by a noisy channel or storage medium can be reduced to any desired level.
