Typical DBA Job Functions
No matter where the lines are drawn, there are certain functions that need to be part of the overall management of any database system. This list is not comprehensive. Every organization will have its own quirks and peculiarities, but these are the basic items.
Keeping the Database Running
This is the primary function of the database administrator in production environments. Especially in mission-critical applications that run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (24x7), the database administrator is judged first on system downtime. In some situations, the cost of minutes of downtime can be more than the annual salary of the DBA.
